What a love story it is! …exquisitely crafted, splendidly structured

1947 A Love Story Movie Review
The Film
1947 A Love Story…What a love story it is! …exquisitely crafted, splendidly structured and beautifully narrated. A tragic story of unfulfilled love that almost brought the Theatre of Dionysus alive! The story swings with the pendulum of time between the ecstasy of hope and the agony of despair.
A love story between a dobhi and a dorasani, between a rustic illiterate Indian and a blue blooded beauty of the English elite, that too in the times of the British rule in India, appear farfetched at first look. But, then the film makes it totally plausible as the frames roll on. Has the story been taken from an unread page of history? Has it really happened? The fiction was woven with such authenticity that you would conclude – It must have happened.
1947 A Love Story Movie Review
The Synopsis
The film opens in the present times, when a septuagenarian widow Mrs. Smith (Carole Trangmar-Palmer) in London wants to go to Madras in India. She arrives in Chennai along with her grand daughter Catherine (Lisa Lazarus). She wants to meet Malli who was young man in 1947. She takes the help of a guide to locate Malli, who must be an octogenarian now.
Cut back to June 18, 1945. Amy Wilkinson (Amy Jackson) arrives in Madras (then Madrasupattinam). She is the daughter of Madras Presidency Governor (Jack James). She was to be engaged to the commissioner of police Robert Ellis (Alexx O’Nell). She hates him. She gets a translater Pandu (Cochin Hanifa) to help her find her way around.
There is a washer man village on the banks of Cooum river. The British want to take over that village to build a golf course. Malli (Arya) is also a dobhi and learns wrestling from his guru (Nazar). The washer men oppose the take over of the village. Events transpire to make Amy meet Mallu, who also takes her on a sight seeing tour of Madras. At the intervention of Amy, the village is spared from being converted into a golf course. Little things make Amy and Mallu come closer. There is the vile Ellis to contend with. And India is on the verge of getting Independence on August 15, 1947. The British rulers, including Amy, have to leave India.
1947 A Love Story Movie Review
Will the love of Amy and Mallu be fulfilled? Will she leave India? Answers to these questions take us to the pre-climax lead.
Back to the present, Mrs Smith is Amy Wilkinson herself. She wants to locate Malli and hand him back the thali he has given her. Will she be able to meet Mallu? Shouldn’t a film that opens with a coffin in view has to end in a cemetery?
The Performances
Amy Jackson is angelic in her beauty and like a fairy in her demeanour. She performs with great natural ease for a debutante. Her expressions appeal to your core sense of appreciation. Arya is restrained and perfectly skips under the skin of his difficult character. He is energetic when required and as still as the serene pond when rippled. Carole Trangmar-Palmer as the aged Amy mystifyingly gives us the impression that she is actually the aged Amy Jackson and not Amy Wilkinson. She does her role extremely well. Alexx O’Nell as the wicked police officer lives his role. Jack James carries himself with dignity as required of a governor. Nassar is his usual self. Cochin Hanifa is convincing and very funny. All others immaculately fit their author-backed roles.

The Techniques
Director ALVijay has come out with a simple story but with intricately braided events encompassing two different spans of time. His delineation of the principal characters is painstakingly diligent to the minutest details. You have no choice but empathise with the role players. His adroit screenplay swings between 1947 and 2011 like an astounding trapeze display with marvelous precision and delicate. balance. It has such a grip on the flow of the film that you sit glued to the screen. Music by GV Prakash Kumar enlivens the proceedings and creates the right moods for the critical scenes. Dialogues by Shashank are meaningful and devoid of the taste of translation. The art director creates authentic period ambience. Cinematography by Nirav Shah is breathtaking and his use of light and shade enhances the visual appeal. Editing by Anthony is crisp and boosts the momentum of narration. Sound design is most appropriate. Production values are decently high.
1947 A Love Story Movie Review
The Verdict
1947 A Love story is a Cinderella-esque celluloid creation where the story of love, between two impossible protagonists at the most improbable period of time, is dealt with extraordinary finesse and stupendous sensitivity.
Director Vijay’s cinematic idioms and metaphors – the lonely boat in river Cooum, ringing of the tram bell, the joy of the country’s freedom constraining the freedom of the lovers, the wrestling match between Mallu and Ellis, the lovers hideout in the clock tower, the rustic fear of airplanes and the railway platform symbolic of journeys missed – appeal to your emotional intelligence.
You will experience a candid catharsis while watching the audio visual artistry and the wizardry of the performers.
Do not miss to watch this splendidly serenaded cinematic creation.

Vaishalli.............

VaishaliVasu (Aadhi) falls in love with Vaishali (Sindhu Menon) during their college days. Vaishali accepts the love of Vasu but clarifies him that her father’s approval is a must for the marriage. Her father disapproves Aadi and marries his daughter off to another guy. After a few years, Aadi becomes an IPS officer and Vaishali kills herself. Aadi is given the responsibility of the investigation. The rest of the story is all about how Aadi cracks the case and brings guilty to book.
Artists Performance
vaishaliAadhi (son of Raviraja Pinisetti) has sharp features and suited the author-backed role really well. His expressions are subtle and body language is effective. Sindhu Menon does a fantastic job in the title role which is bound to attract lot of sympathy. Saranya Mohan played the role of Sindhu’s sister and she is efficient. Nandha who did the role of Sindhu’s husband carries off himself well.
Technical departments
VaishaliStory - screenplay - direction: It is a super-natural thriller that is dealt in a realistic way. Debutant director Arivazhagan Venkatachalam comes up with a film of new genre that deals with love, relationship, supernatural elements, investigations and societal nature in typical apartment dwellers. The director has stuck with an innovative narration throughout the movie. He is also technically very sound.
vaishaliOther departments: Manoj Paramahamsa’s (Ye Maya Chesave fame) cinematography is of top-rate. He maintained uniform texture for the entire movie. Music by Thaman is a revelation. Thaman who has given popular music for several Telugu films like Kick, Brindavanam and Mirapakai has shown the other side of him with the music he has provided for this movie. Music (both songs and background music) is suave and technically brilliant. Production values and dubbing by the producers Shankar and Dil Raju are flawless.
VaishaliAnalysis: This film is the dubbed version of Tamil’s blockbuster Eeram. First half of the film is very gripping. Second half should have been more compact. It is a supernatural crime thriller and is very different from the films we see in Telugu. The success of the film will depend on how Telugu movie lovers embrace the supernatural aspect of the movie. It’s a technically good movie and is worth dubbing in Telugu. And makes a decent watch.

Good movie watch it now.................

Shakti................

Shakti is reportedly the costliest film made in the Telugu Film Industry so far. With someone like Jr.NTR and some more big names involved with it, obviously the expectations are too high. Question is, does Shakti has enough power to keep the box office rocking!

What’s it about : Faktuni (Pooja Bedi) is the wife of an Egyptian Pharaoh(?) Mukhtar (Sonu Sood) who set his eyes on Maha Shakti Trishulam that belongs to a sacred Temple in Hampi. Even after Mukhtar is killed, Faktuni starts preparing her son Raakha to find theTrishulam! Twenty One years later inHyderabad, Central Minister Maha Deva Raya’s (Prabhu) daughter Aishwarya, steals somemoney and runs away from home to enjoy a holiday with her friends. She doesn’t know that she had accidentally slipped into her bag a sacred diamond, Jwala Mukhi that has amazing history and magical powers. In Jaipur, she meets Shakti (Jr.NTR) a local guide, who also accompanies them on their trip to Kashmir, Haridwar etc. Even though they are not cordial to each other, it isn’t long before that Shakti keeps saving her from the repeated attacks of the goons sent by Faktuni! In the mean time Jackie (Jackie Shroff) wants to become the richest person in the world as he offers to sell them yet another sacred item – Maha Khadgam! As the usual sacred date to take over the Trishulam nears, it seems only Shakti has the power to stop Faktuni’s ultimate weapon Raakha (Daniel)! But before that Shakti has to realize the power of all these three sacred items, and how he is related to all of them!
What is Good : Inspite of an interesting story line, Shakti completely belongs to Jr.NTR. He fully shoulders the responsibility of taking the film to the next level, and seems to have given it his heart and soul. His portrayal of Rudra, a character in the flashback episodes is fairly done, but he has never looked as cool as he looks in the pre-interval fight episode. Even though Ileana’s only dancing ability - the typical belly dance movement, gets repetitive in every song, the Goan lass is pleasing on the eyes.
The other good part of Shakti is that it boasts of heavy casting. Apart from the heavy weights already mentioned above, we see likes of Manjari Phadnis, Vinod Kumar, Nazar, Sayaji Shinde, S.P.Balasubrahmaniyam, Manju Bharagavi, Brahmanandam, Ali, Venu Madhav, Srinivas Reddy, and more! While the story probably had enough to reason why such big names have been chosen in the film, it is the execution of the story that disappoints.
What is bad: There are two major issues with the movie. The first one is - on the first look of it, the Egyptian episodes, with actors wearing Pharoah like costumes and Pyramids in the background, you might think that the story is happening in 3000 B.C.! But when you realize that the story’s time line is very much ‘Today’, you will be jostled out of your seats. And the second one - even as few characters seems to travel between India, Dubai and Egypt we hardly see any time lapse. These two errors make you cringe in your seat as the story progresses, sometimes slowly and sometimes rapidly! The characters of Pooja Bedi and Daniel do not seem to have anything to challenge the might of Shakti, for whom almost every fight seems to be a cakewalk!
Technical Departments : If Shakti turns out to be a disaster at the box office, it seems there is only one person responsible – director Meher Ramesh. A movie with Fantasy elements associated with Hindu religion, mixed with Telugu action film components sounds like a fair idea. However, Meher completely fails to take the story to the next level, inspite of having five writers, good actors and huge budget to support him. He hangs onto dialogues which we’ve heard before many times and with some bizarre editing the movie seems longer than it is! On the positive side, Mani Sharma’s work in the rerecording is quite noticeable and appealing at times, while Sameer Reddy’s cinematography is good in songs and fights. Almost all the songs have been shot well, and the fight sequences will make Jr.NTR’s fans quite happy. The art director creates a splendid atmosphere around the sacred temple, but fails to create the same with the props! Visual Effects are rich too!
Final Point : Without any changes in the script, Shakti could have been a much better film. And if you are going withoutexpectations, Jr.NTR and Ileana might offer you some entertainment!

Not upto the mark.......

Mangala is a horror film with the conflict between evil spells and divine forces dominating the proceedings.

The Synopsis

Mangala (Charmi) is a popular film actress. When one of her fans (Vijay Sai) wants to greet her, she slaps him thinking that he tried to misbehave with her. The fan tries to commit suicide and is on his death bed. His father (Pradeep Rawat) wants Mangala to come and console his son. She refuses and the fan dies. The enraged father, who is an expert in witchcraft, casts a spell on Mangala and she is doomed to die. The rest of the story is about how Mangala copes with the evil spell. Will she be able to come out of it safely?.

The Performances

Charmi gives a spirited performance and emotes convincingly. Pradeep Rawat is evil personified. Vijay Sai does well. Subhash, Uttej and Chitram Seenu fit their roles. All others go through their motions.

The Techniques

Mangala Movie Review

Osho Tulasiram has a good story but the screenplay has its pitfalls which does not make the narration gripping. Horror cannot be generated by mere camera angles and sound effects. The content is insufficient to sustain the thrill or suspense. Dialogues do not make any impact. Vishwa’s music and background score is good. Cinematography by Dasaradhi Sivendra is scintilating. Editing could have been better. Production values are good.

The Verdict

Mangala is not as gripping as Tulasiram-Charmi earlier film Mantra. But for Charmi’s rivetting performance Mangala has nothing else. The lag in the narration and the lacklustre climax add to the woes of the film.
